Wine-maker debuts in Goa

wine3Panaji, Feb 27: Charosa Wineries has proclaimed its debut here with a number of wines and an eye on the Goa market, that accounts nearly 20 % of Indian wine trade.

According to the company’s chief in operation officer (COO) Parag Kamat, the complete plans to initial consolidate in southwestern Indian states like Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala and Karnataka before stepping into northern India.

“Goa as a state is vital for the wine business,” Kamat said, adding that the small state alone, famed for its mode and beach tourism, accounted for 15-20 % of wine sales in India.

Charosa Wineries is in hand by construction major Hindustan Construction Company promoter Ajit Gulabchand.

On Wednesday, Charosa Vineyards undraped a large vary of wines from the fruity Charosa alternatives Viognier to the well rounded Charosa selections Shiraz and what the promoters opt to decision its trump – the award winning Charosa Reserve Tempranillo – among others.

Named once the Charosa village close to Nasik, that is home to the company’s vineyards cover around 230 acres, Kamat said the winery will turn out a million bottles each year.

The Indian wine market, in line with Kamat, presently consumes one.2 million cases of the regionally factory-made product annually, and 2 lakh cases of foreign wine.

Kamat said that one amongst their main competitors was Sula Wines, that had a 70 to 75 % market share.

Addressing the media at the launch, Clive Castelino, manager (Training and company Sales), said that one amongst the many process-innovations introduced by the Charosa Wineries was the cooling of grapes between the time they’re plucked and crushed for fermentation.

“This helps retain the phenolic content within the grapes, which reinforces the flavour,” he said.

The Charosa Wines are priced between Rs.500 and Rs.1,500.
